Some background
Acclaimed engineer/scientist/McArthur genius grant winner Saul Griffith is the leader of the “Electrify Everything” movement to battle climate change. While in Silicon Valley he founded Rewiring America, a non-partisan organization dedicated to electrification and decarbonization that was hugely instrumental in the single largest climate investment in American history – the $369 billion for “Energy Security and Climate Change” included in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.
Serendipity at the dog beach
After reading an article about Saul in the Washington Post, it dawned on me that I actually knew him from casual conversations at the local dog beach of our small town an hour south of Sydney. Turns out he’d moved to the neighborhood during the pandemic and was in the early stages of making Rewiring Australia.
Long story longer
I ended up helping Saul launch Rewiring Australia, which has since helped push the country to the forefront of the global electrification movement. We worked with VMLY&R to do an entire brand toolkit (logo, fonts, colors, etc), set up social accounts and make an intro spot (below), all under some insane time constraints. We needed to launch before COP26 in order to put some grassroots pressure on Australia’s yet-to-be-announced UN climate commitments, even going so far as to target specific politicians when we knew they’d be watching tv at the gym.
Fun Aussie fact
The VO of the launch spot (below) is Stephen Curry, aka Dale Kerrigan in ‘The Castle.’
(for non-Aussies, The Castle is an oft-quoted comedy classic that’s regarded as one of the greatest Australian films ever made)
